The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards resulted from an amalgamation of two cavalry regiments in 1922.   These were the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales) Dragoon Guards and the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.    These two old, distinguished regiments had previously earned great honour and distinction.   They were part of the Heavy Brigade in the Crimea - taking part in the successful charge at Balaklava (immediately before the better known and disastrous charge of the Light Brigade).  Both regiments also fought together during the Boer War, where the 5th Dragoon Guards, under Colonel Baden-Powell, were part of the force beseiged at Ladysmith.   The 5th Dragoon Guards and the 6th Inniskillings served in France  during the1914-18 War, often fighting in a dismounted role.

After the frustrations of amalgamation, the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards were stationed in Colchester and it was there, in 1937, the Royal title was added to its name.  The regiment became mechanised in 1938 and a final mounted parade was held in the presence of His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester at Colchester .  During the second world war the regiment took part in the retreat to Dunkirk and in the North West Europe campaign in 1944-45 as part of  7th Armoured Division.

Since then the Regiment has served in Germany on several occasions, in Korea (1952), in Egypt (1953), in Aden with squadrons in Bahrain and Hong Kong (1965),  in Libya - with a United Nations squadron in Cyprus (1966-67).   There have been intervening tours in England (Catterick Camp, Weeton and Tidworth) and shorter dismounted tours in Cyprus and Northern Ireland.   The regiment also had individuals serving in other trouble spots, including Kuwait.

In 1992 the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards was amalgamated with the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards to become the Royal Dragoon Guards.

Additions

I have added a new page to this section of my website.   It is called "Old Friends" and will include pictures of former Skins as they are now.  I go to reunions in York so most of the pictures will be of people there.   However, if you are accessing this site and have photographs you would like included, please email them to me and I will try to include them.   I prefer pictures in "jpeg" form please.

5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards Reunion in Blackpool

For several years the Inniskillings have held a very successful reunion of previous members and attached members of the Regiment in the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool.  Reunions take place in April.   In April 2004 we were privileged to welcome the Colonel in Chief of the Regiment to our reunion.   I have attached some photographs of his visit at "Blackpool Reunion 2004"
